USGS Denver Microbeam Laboratory

USGS and university geochemists inside the eruptive crater of Kilauea volcano, Hawaii, preparing to use filtering devices to collect small particles suspended in the plume. A volcanic plume is a physical mixture of particles and gaseous solutions. Particles remain on the filters, the gases pass through. The poisonous gases sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are present, as are hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids, hence the respirator masks are used.
